GUIDED TOURS OF LOGAN HISTORIC DISTRICT ADDED TO
MURPHYSBORO’S FLAG DAY SERVICE
Following the Service this Saturday, there will be guided walking tours led by Dr. Rachel Ensor, chair of the Murphysboro Historic Preservation Commission, and P. Michael Jones, director of the GeneralJohnA.LoganMuseumand chair of the Tourism Commission. Stories of the Logan Historic District Walking Tour will last about 45 minutes and be offered twice — 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
The 7th Annual Community Flag Day Service on Saturday, June 9, at 10:00 a.m., will be held in the Logan Historic District, located on Edith Street between South 16th and 17th Streets (behind the Tourism Center and Logan Museum) and is a partnership among the City of Murphysboro and its Tourism Commission, the General John A.LoganMuseum, American Legion Paul Stout Post 127, Elks Lodge 572, Patriots Bravo Co., Veterans of Foreign War Post 7190, Friends of Murphysboro, Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce, and Murphysboro Masonic Lodge 498.
The schedule is as follows:
10:00 a.m. – Arrival of caravan transporting the flag symbolic of those to be retired
7th Annual Community Flag Day Service
11:00 Flag Retirement
Museum opens for viewing of permanent exhibit and temporary exhibit, “Caught in the Sweep of History:Egyptin the Civil War 1861-1862”
Sales: RiversidePark Memorial Remembrance Walk Bricks; chances on a Civil War Remembrance Quilt; and/or a copy of A Weekend in Murphysboro

The Service will consist of a proper flag folding (but it will be done with a 20’ x 30’ flag) by the Elks Lodge 572 Flag Team and Scouts. There will be patriotic music and ceremonial proceedings appropriate to honor the flag of our country. Dr. Harvey Welch, Lt. Col. (U. S. Air Force Retired), will present the keynote address: My Choice Is The Red, White, and Blue.
Individuals who have worn flags to be reverently retired can bring them to the Service or take them in advance to the American Legion at1700 Gartside Streetor theLoganMuseum.
“Murphysboro is proud to conduct this Service for its educational value alone. The high spirits instilled in participants and the tourism aspects are priceless, too,” said Barbara Dallas, event organizer. “It would be even more rewarding for individuals to observe the very considerate retirement each flag receives and possibly even assist in the honor.”
Bring lawn chairs or blankets and umbrellas (sun or drizzle protection), and military personnel are invited to wear their uniforms and veterans their medals. There is no charge for admission. The event will be held rain or shine.
